HIMSS Student Membership

Click to sign up for a free HIMSS Student Membership.

As a student in the Texas State HIM program, you may be eligible for FREE student membership in the Health Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS). Membership in HIMSS provides access to national (online) and local chapter benefits, including scholarships, discounts, service and leadership opportunities, as well as educational and research programs. There are local HIMSS chapters in many major cities throughout Texas and the country. Texas has several strong chapters that come together annually for the Texas Regional HIMSS Conference which includes opportunities for students to submit research posters as well as deliver presentations.

HIMSS is the healthcare industry’s membership organization focused on better health through information and technology. HIMSS leads efforts to optimize health engagements and care outcomes using information technology. The HIMSS focus on health IT is a nice complement to the AHIMA focus on health information management. Health IT is an important component of our HIM curriculum. The Texas State University HIM department is a member of the HIMSS Academic Organizational Affiliate (AOA) program which provides benefits to students and is also a HIMSS Approved Education Partner (AEP).

Benefits:

As an Academic Organizational Affiliate, the HIM department is able to extend complimentary individual HIMSS membership to most of our students. To be eligible for an AOA student membership you must meet the following requirements:

  • May not hold a full-time employment position in the fields of healthcare information and technology
  • Be officially enrolled part-time or full-time at an accredited educational institution in an undergraduate or graduate HIM program
  • Upload documentation of official enrollment during the membership application process
  • Agree that the information provided about your student status is accurate
